Paul Skenes’ career highlights start with his rapid rise at LSU, where he became a national star, helped lead the Tigers to a 2023 title, and won the College World Series Most Outstanding Player award. He then went first overall in the 2023 MLB Draft to the Pittsburgh Pirates, which made him the clear top pitching prospect in the sport. From there, his early MLB debut in 2024 added the first pro milestones to a resume that had already drawn attention everywhere he pitched.
Criteria for choosing these highlights
This list focuses on the moments that changed how people viewed Skenes’ career: the college achievements that made him a star, the draft status that confirmed his prospect value, the early MLB moments that showed the hype carried over, and the awards that best summarize his rise.
I’m not using every good outing or every stat line here. The goal is to keep the biggest turning points: the ones fans are most likely to remember and the ones that explain why Skenes became such a big name so quickly.
The career highlights that define Paul Skenes so far
LSU transfer and instant stardom
Skenes transferred from Air Force to LSU and quickly became one of the most watched pitchers in college baseball. His fastball velocity, size, and command made him stand out right away, but the bigger story was how quickly he became the centerpiece of a national title contender.
2023 national championship run
The biggest team milestone on his college résumé is LSU’s run to the 2023 national championship. Skenes was a major reason the Tigers got there, and that run turned him from a top pitching prospect into a true national name.
College World Series Most Outstanding Player
Skenes was named the Most Outstanding Player of the College World Series. That award is one of the clearest signs of how central he was to LSU’s championship push, and it sits near the top of his college accomplishments.
SEC Pitcher of the Year and All-America recognition
He also earned SEC Pitcher of the Year honors and major All-America attention. Those awards backed up what scouts were seeing and showed that his season was not just a short hot streak.
First overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft
Skenes was selected first overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2023 MLB Draft. That mattered because the No. 1 pick is the strongest possible signal that a team sees a player as a franchise-level talent, and it confirmed that his college rise had translated into elite pro status.
Quick climb to the majors
Skenes signed with Pittsburgh and moved fast through the system. He reached the majors in 2024, which kept his rise moving at the same pace it had in college and made him one of the most closely watched rookie pitchers in baseball.
Early MLB debut and immediate attention
His MLB debut drew attention because the stuff that made him famous in college was there right away. The early stretch of his major league career mattered less as a single box score than as proof that his velocity and swing-and-miss ability translated against big-league hitters.
Early rookie-year buzz
Another milestone was how quickly he moved from debut story to front-line starter conversation. For a rookie pitcher with this much hype, that kind of immediate trust and attention is itself part of the highlight reel, even before the long-term résumé is built.
How to judge which milestones matter most
If you want the shortest version of Skenes’ career highlights, start with three things: LSU’s 2023 championship run, the No. 1 overall draft pick, and his 2024 MLB debut. Those are the milestones that changed his level of recognition.
If you want the fuller picture, add the individual honors that explain why he rose so fast: College World Series Most Outstanding Player, SEC Pitcher of the Year, and the All-America recognition that came with his LSU season. Together, those honors show that his rise was built on performance, not just hype.
What to verify for the most current update
If you want the latest stats or honors, check Skenes’ official MLB player page, the Pirates’ roster or player page, and LSU’s baseball archive. Those are the places most likely to reflect his current numbers, any new awards, and any new firsts or records.
That’s worth doing because his résumé is still changing quickly. A career highlights list for Skenes can look different after one strong start, a new award announcement, or a fresh milestone in the majors.
